Spotlight on Dopff au Moulin at Sips & Bites April Edition

Spotlight on Dopff au Moulin at Sips & Bites April Edition

Sips & Bites continues its monthly run of bringing together wine lovers in Singapore, and April’s edition offered a refreshing deep dive into the elegance of Alsace. Held on 19 April at Mad Roasters, the evening welcomed 25 guests for a relaxed yet engaging tasting experience hosted by Dunstan Vintner.

While the full flight explored both French and Italian expressions, the night began with a standout introduction of Dopff au Moulin.

A Bright Start with Dopff au Moulin

Opening the tasting on a crisp, aromatic note, Dopff au Moulin set the tone for the evening with wines that perfectly captured the finesse and purity of Alsace. As a historic estate and pioneer of Crémant d’Alsace, Dopff au Moulin is known for crafting wines that balance tradition with precision, highlighting the region’s distinctive terroir.

Two wines in particular framed this elegant introduction:

Riesling Domaine Familial Dopff au Moulin

Alsace Riesling Domaine Familial 2018

Light-bodied and dry, this Riesling immediately impressed with its clarity and freshness. A bright yellow hue hinted at the vibrancy within, while the nose revealed delicate mineral and floral aromas. On the palate, it was precise and energetic, finishing with a subtle saline edge and notes of pepper and crisp orchard fruit. Its clean structure made it an ideal pairing for seafood and shellfish: effortless, refined, and quietly complex.

Gewurtztraminer Domaine Familial Dopff au Moulin

 Alsace Gewurztraminer Domaine Familial 2020

If the Riesling was about precision, the Gewurztraminer brought expressive intensity. From the first pour, it drew attention with its golden hue and aromatic bouquet of flowers, exotic spice, and a touch of smokiness. Rich yet balanced, the palate delivered both texture and lift, showcasing the grape’s natural opulence without overwhelming the senses. It proved to be a natural match for bold, flavorful dishes such as foie gras and aged cheeses.

Why Dopff au Moulin Stood Out

In a lineup that included robust Tuscan reds and a structured Brunello, Dopff au Moulin’s wines stood out for their clarity, drinkability, and immediate charm. They offered a refreshing contrast with wines that are lighter in body yet no less complex, inviting guests to appreciate nuance over power.

The Gewurztraminer, in particular, became one of the evening’s favorites, with guests returning for multiple pours. Its aromatic depth and balanced richness made it both approachable and memorable, an easy highlight of the night.

The Takeaway

Dopff au Moulin’s presence at Sips & Bites was a reminder of the enduring appeal of Alsace wines: expressive, food-friendly, and deeply rooted in terroir. Whether through the precision of Riesling or the aromatic allure of Gewurztraminer, the estate delivered a compelling start to an evening dedicated to discovery.

As Sips & Bites continues to grow its community of wine lovers, evenings like this reaffirm the value of beginning with wines that awaken the palate and set the stage for everything that follows.
