Creating a DIY Wine Tasting for Two at Home on Valentine's Day

Updated: Nov 3, 2023

Valentine's Day is the perfect excuse to indulge in some of life's finer things, like wine. And what better way to celebrate this special day than with a DIY wine tasting for two in the comfort of your own home? This guide will show you how to create a memorable wine-tasting experience for you and your significant other.

Choose your Wines

First, choose your wines. For this tasting, we will be tasting the following wines. These wines are carefully selected to offer a variety of flavours and aromas, making for a well-rounded tasting experience.

Prepare your Wine Glasses

Next, prepare your wine glasses. Make sure they are clean and free of any residue, and that they are the appropriate size for the wine you will be serving. It's also a good idea to have a separate glass for each wine, so you can fully appreciate the unique characteristics of each one.

Set the Mood

Now, it's time to set the mood. Light some candles, dim the lights and put on some soft background music. This will create a romantic and intimate atmosphere, perfect for Valentine’s date wine tasting.

Start Tasting

When you're ready to start the wine tasting, begin by pouring a small amount of the 2021 Quinta Da Raza Grande Escolha Alvarinho-Trajadura into each of your glasses. As you pour, take note of the wine's colour and clarity. Hold the glass up to the light to observe its hue and saturation.

Next, take a moment to observe the aroma of the wine. Swirl the wine in the glass to release the aromas, then bring the glass to your nose and take a deep breath in. Note any distinct fragrances that you can detect, such as fruit, floral, mineral, or oak.

Once you've observed the aroma, it's time to taste the wine. Take a small sip and let it linger on your tongue for a moment before swallowing. As you taste, pay attention to the wine's body, acidity, and tannins if any. Note any flavours that you can detect.

After you've finished tasting the first wine, move on to the 2018 Volcanic Hills Rose, 2014 Tyrian Clouds Merlot, and finish with the 2015 McHenry Hohnen Rolling Stone. Repeat the process of observing the colour, aroma, and taste of each wine. Be sure to take note of any differences or similarities between the wines.

Share your thoughts and observations with your partner, and enjoy the conversation and connection that develops as you explore these wines together. Remember that wine tasting is not just about drinking but also about experiencing and learning.

For a more enjoyable evening, prepare cheese and crackers to cleanse your palate in between the wines. Don't forget to enjoy each other’s company. This is a special moment to celebrate love, not rush!

A DIY wine tasting is a unique and memorable way to celebrate Valentine's Day with your loved one. With a little preparation and the proper selection of wines, you can create an extraordinary evening that you'll both treasure for years to come. So, cheers to love and wine! Shop wines now.
